Viola Frey: Paintings, Sculpture, Drawings | 1983
Essay by Jan Butterfield
Quay Gallery, San Francisco, CA
“The one crucial factor that separates Frey from the archaeologist or the anthropologist is her most distinguishing characteristic: she reconstructs and reinterprets the found objects she unearths in expanded scale and layered context. Her curious gift lies not only in her capacity to rediscover animals, creatures, and objects discarded by society, but in her capacity to bring life to these orphaned castoffs and to give them scale and voice. If they are comfortable with her, it is because they speak a common language that her brushstrokes have incised into the paintings and her hands have worked into the clay.” – Jan Butterfield
This show presented a variety of artworks of different media in the same space, including unique bronze sculptures, monumental figurative sculpture (called “figurines” in this catalogue), and paintings on canvas.
